Curious Collective

The subject of my Final Major Project for my BA in Graphic Communication at CSM was to ask ‘*What are you curious about?’, and to explore the proposition, ‘I am different because…’

Curiosity’ and ‘difference’ strike me as being central to everything I have been challenged by, learned and achieved up to this point. The journey from learning to knowing, and the ‘curiosity’ to explore new areas of knowledge in some ways defines education, and throughout my former studies I experienced everything in between – moments of confusion, uncertainty, being out of my depth, then moments of clarity and a sense of purpose and achievement.

In order to take my FMP away from my individuality and personal experiences, and to engage with this desire to communicate and be helpful, I made the idea of a ‘collective’ central to my project. Being part of a creative community was one of the most rewarding aspects of my BA, and I wanted my project to celebrate this community and give something back to it.

My outcome was a triptych of digitally produced posters. The purpose of these posters is the promotion of a new collective called the ‘Curious Collective’. The focal point for the launch of this new collective was a zine called ‘Curious Collective’, a publication that I hope can run on an on-going basis and whose purpose is to create a supportive, sharing, positive, inclusive, accepting publication for students in the UAL student community, a ‘curious collective’.  I saw the publication as a prototype for testing viability for a future, on-going publication, perhaps extending to wider student audiences. The publication gave a voice to students inner thoughts and feelings, and the ways that their curiosity is expressed.
